ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A burner for indirectly heating a fluid bed of a black liquor gasifier comprises a heating tube disposed in the fluid bed for burning a fluid-air mixture and producing a combustion product. The heating tube has an inlet end for receiving the fluid-air mixture and an outlet end opposite the inlet end for passing the combustion product from the heating tube. A porous tube having a plurality of pores is located within the heating tube. The porous tube has an open end positioned near the inlet end of the heating tube and a closed end opposite the open end. The porous tube is made of a ceramic material and is circumferentially spaced from an inner surface of the heating tube.
