ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Porous diaphragms of a synthetic material, especially polytetrafluoroethylene, in which the pores of the synthetic material are elongated in shape and have an average length which is at least twice their average width. The diaphragms are prepared by forming a sheet of the synthetic material in admixture with a solid particulate additive to be removed therefrom, and removing the solid particulate additive from the sheet. Cellulose is the preferred particulate additive for producing pores of suitable dimensions. The porous dia- phragms are especially useful for use in horizontal or vertical diaphragms cells for the production of chlorine from sodium chloride brine.
