ABSTRACT The invention relates to a method of densifying a porous material. The method comprises impregnating the porous material such as wood with a protein or modified protein and cross linking or curing the protein or modified protein. A combination of the protein or modified protein and the porous material forms a composite material. In a preferred form the protein is casein or casein modified by the use of proteolytic enzymes. -1-
