A porous membrane is provided by biaxally stretching a film of high density polyethylene (HDPE), including particles of an incompatible material. This film has a meshed network of HDPE fibers and striations of layers coplanar with the plane of the film. This film is porous in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the film and has a void content of at least 20%. The porous membrane may have one or more nonporous backing layers. The membrane may be used as filter or battery separator.

L'invention concerne une membrane poreuse obtenue par étirement biaxial d'un feuil de polyéthylène haute densité (HDPE) comprenant des particules de matériau incompatible. Ce feuil comporte un réseau maillé de fibres HDPE et des stries de couches situées dans le même plan que le feuil. Ce feuil est poreux dans un sens perpendiculaire à son plan et présente une teneur en vide d'au moins 20 %. Cette membrane poreuse peut posséder une ou plusieurs couches de renforcement non poreuses. On peut utiliser cette membrane en tant que séparateur de filtre ou de pile électrique.
