ABSTRACT A free-standing portable all-climate shelter attains rigidity and shape without the use either of tools or of separately constructed framework, by fastening with toggles the inwardly folding flap edges of prefabricated panels. SPECIFICATION In general, this invention relates to a portable all-climate shelter; and, more particularly, to an assemblage of prefabricated elements readily assembled or disassembled, respectively, into or from units erectable on site without the need for tools of any kind. Protection from weather extremes in all climates is afforded with a minimum of effort and material expenditure. Because rigidity in the erected unit is attained by applying principles of monococque construction, this invention may be classified with frameless self-supporting structures, but is intended primarily to perform functions for which heavier-type tents often have been used; for example, for wilderness survival, disaster relief, emergency, or military purposes. It is common in portable shelters from extremes of climate to provide substantial means to rigidify the walls of the structure so that the force of wind can be withstood and structural deformation prevented, in order to preserve the integrity of the protective environment within the shelter. In heavier- type tents, support and structural integrity normally involves tensioning by the use of poles, guys, and stakes; and, it is vital to the effectiveness of such means that they be exactly positioned and precisely adjusted; yet, changing weather conditions necessitate frequent readjustments in order to maintain the intended shape. One approach to avoiding the problems associated with shelter integrity maintained by poles, guys, and stakes has been to eliminate them, replacing their function by using inflatable tubes for structural support. The inflation of such tubes, however, requires a special device, eg. an air pump. It would be desirable to eliminate the tent support elements, but without adding the new requirement of carrying an air pump. A third option -1-
