ABSTRACT A portable crash-survivable kinetic energy storage machine, which makes use of a ring-shaped flywheel designed to be suspended by an electromagnetic levitation system. The levitation system provides high strength suspension of the flywheel. In the event of a sudden collision, the rotating flywheel is not permitted to come into contact with the physical enclosure. Before the flywheel can contact its enclosure, the outer layer of crushable thermal insulation will be crushed to absorb collision energy. Immediately after a collision, it will be possible to gracefully drain kinetic energy from the flywheel before degraded thermal insulation can disable the function of the superconductive elements of the levitation system. This provides special crash survivability, which is the basic purpose of this invention. The flywheel is mostly composed of composite material. Superconductive induction loops are attached to the flywheel as part of the levitation system, and a lightweight, ring-shaped motor-generator magnet is positioned along the inside radius of the ring-shaped flywheel. There is provided a physical enclosure which surrounds the flywheel. Part of the enclosure is an evacuated interior bulkhead or wall which forms a lightweight solid shell immediately surrounding the flywheel. Surrounding the interior bulkhead, there is provided a layer of crushable thermal insulation material. Surrounding the layer of crushable thermal insulation material, there is provided a solid outer bulkhead which forms the outer physical enclosure of the invention. Embedded within the material of the interior bulkhead which surrounds the flywheel, there is provided a strong lightweight electromagnetic flywheel levitation system and a light-weight motor-generator system for acceleration or deceleration of the rotation of the flywheel.
