A power management system for a portable electronic device comprises an energy source, a voltage regulator coupled to the energy source, a capacitive network comprising at least two super-capacitors in series and for receiving low current from the voltage regulator and providing high current to power a load circuit and a voltage balancing circuit for maintaining an equalized voltage across the two super-capacitors.
