A portable element is shaped approximately as a card and comprises means for receiving, staring, displaying and outputting data, at least part of which concerns numerical or alphanumerical characters. It is used for temporarily communicating with an at least partly locally present reservation system and to exchange data therewith. The reservation system communicates, if desired, with a service facility which is not locally present, for example, a transport vehicle. On the basis of an actual or forecast status of the service facility (for example, concerning position and/or free capacity of the service facility) reservation data are applied to the portable element, and are possibly displayed thereon, and are possibly also applied to the service facility. The contactless communication between portable element and reservation device can be initiated by a proximity signal.
