A portable excercise device (15) for use by a human through abduction of the upper portions of the legs of the human. The device (15) includes a spring (18) and first and second spaced apart arms (21) having proximal portions (22) joined to the spring (18) and distal portions (23) adapted for engaging the outside of the upper portions of the legs. The spring (18) biases the arms (21) toward a first position in which the distal portions (23) are in close proximity to each other so as to engage the outside of the upper portions of the legs when the upper portions of the legs are in a generally juxtaposed position and serving as a pivot to permit the arms (21) to move away from each other to a second position when so urged by the human spreading apart the upper portions of the legs. The distal portions (23) are generally curved toward each other with a substantial curvature over a substantial length so as to grip the outside of the upper portions of the legs and inhibit the device (15) from slipping off the upper portions of the legs during use. A method for using the device (15) is provided.
