ABSTRACT A portable food processor comprising a basic unit made up of a base containing an electric motor having a handle portion by which the apparatus may be lifted and an upper portion which includes a feed tube through which foodstuffs can be fed the base and the upper portion being constructed so that the upper portion can be assembled to the base in two different configurations in one of which the basic unit receives a food processing unit consisting of a container having a food processing blade rotatable therein to be driven by the electric motor and in the other of which the basic unit receives a slicing or shredding unit which includes a substantially horizontally arranged disk and an outlet though which sliced or shredded material is delivered. Preferably, a control for the electric motor is provided including a manually operable switch and a set of contacts arranged so that in both configurations of the apparatus the switch cannot be closed manually and unless the upper portion is properly engaged with the base and with either the slicing or shredding unit or the food processing unit.
