The hydraulic tool (10) having a frame (12) and a movable adapter (18). The frame (12) defines a workspace (48) with an anvil adapter (16) at one end and a substantially flat face guide surface (32) on one side of the workspace (48). The movable adapter (18) is used for working a piece in the workspace (48) against the anvil adapter (16). The movable adapter (18) is movably mounted to the frame (12) to move in the workspace (48) relative to the frame (12) along an axis of translation (A). The movable adapter (18) has a substantially flat face seating surface (98) seated against the guide surface of the frame (32). When the movable adapter (18) is moved, the seating surface (98) of the movable adapter (18) rides upon the guide surface (32). The seating surface (98) and guide surface (32) interface with each other for maintaining the movable adapter (18) in a predetermined orientation relative to the frame (12).
