A load distribution apparatus for protecting seats or upholstered furniture surfaces when placing a load thereon. In an illustrative embodiment, a load distribution apparatus is substantially flat, and may be placed on a horizontal seat surface for passengers or crew to step on when entering or disembarking a vessel, or for supporting cargo. The apparatus includes a central core panel and an outer cover which substantially surrounds and encloses the core panel. A compressible padding may be interposed between the core and outer panel. Optionally, the exterior surface of the outer cover may have a slip-resistant material thereon.
