PORTABLE MASSAGE UNIT Abstract A portable massage apparatus has a power unit with a drive shaft connected to a drive cable extending to a hand held massage applicator to rotate an eccentric within the applicator for therapeutic vibration. At both of its ends, the cable has squared drive keys in sliding-driving engagement with the motor and applicator shafts. The motor shaft has an outer bore, and a con- nector extension fits around the motor shaft and projects outwardly therefrom. The connector has a square bore which receives a cable drive key that slides within the connector, and within and beyond the end of the motor shaft, to accommodate tension and compression exerted upon the cable yet remains in driving engagement with the motor shaft. At the applicator, the second cable drive key slides within a square bore and also a larger bore in the applicator drive shaft but remains in driving engagement with the shaft. Swivel couplings are provided at both ends of a sheath that surrounds the cable. At the power unit the sheath is fitted with a-first ferrule having a cylindrical flange that is secured by a cylindrical nut to a bell sleeve attached to the applicator, the second sheath end fits with a second ferrule having a circular flange secured by a nut within the applicator for swivel movement relative thereto. A high strength bearing of stronger material than the rest of the applicator is provided near the eccentric, and the applicator has watertight seals. The unitary structure of the applicator provides a passageway for the eccentric drive shaft and for hold- ing the second ferrule. The power unit has a carrying handle which receives and releasably locks the appli- cator so that a single hand can grasp and carry both the power unit handle and the applicator. The rear of the applicator has textile latching material secured to it which locks with the side surface of a textile belt so that the belt can hold the applicator against a selected part of the body.
