Abstract of the Disclosure Disclosed is a portable pelorus for use on a vessel such as a ship. A pelorus is a sighting device used to obtain the azomath bearings of objects for the purpose of navigation. Existing pelori are either mounted on a pedestal in the bridge or retracted from the bridge deckhead and consequently available reference targets are frequently obscured by "wooding" around the bridge windows. Two embodiments of portable pelori are disclosed, an optical version and an electromagnetic version. In the optical version, a rotating beam of light is reflected from a reflector mounted at a known angle to the ship's axis and is detected by a photodiode when the beam is perpendicular to the reflector to provide a reference bearing. The bearing of a sighted object is provided by the output of a shaft-angle encoder to provide the relative bearing of the sighted object. A microprocessor can utilize the relative bearing and the ship's bearing to derive the object's true bearing. The electromagnetic version determines the ship's heading by using two orthogonally mounted coils for sensing the oscillating magnetic field produced by at least one electrical conductor mounted at a known angle to the axis of the ship The voltages produced by the coils are used to activate servo device to maintain one of the coils parallel to the conductor. A shaft angle encoder again provides the relative bearing of a sighted object for the microprocessor to derive the true bearing of the object.
