A portable skate sharpening device comprising a body part having a support portion with a lower surface suitable for being clamped or bolted to a flat support in stable manner, or for being held by a vice, and having bearings supporting a rotatable shaft which is parallel to the lower surface. The shaft has front and rear end portions projecting from the body part, the rear end portion being suitable for attachment to a hand drill chuck, and a cylindrical grinding drum is attachable to the front end portion of the shaft. The body part has guide means for guiding a manually held skate blade along a path parallel to the shaft and into radial contact with the grinding drum. The grinding drum includes a readily replaceable abrasive sleeve mounted on a metal cylindrical holder.
