A portable and preferably hand-held X-ray generator (10) for use in intraoral and other X-ray applications, and a new process of dental image acquisition which utilizes a novel receptor holder (24) physically linked to the lightweight, portable generator (10), and a unique, articulating arm (104) and cradle (108) which allows one generator (10) to be used in multiple operatories. The system's generator has a reduced X-ray output and much smaller focal spot area than conventional dental X-ray generators, which reduces the X-ray output and the overall patient X-ray burden. The smaller focal spot also allows for improved resolution in the final image.

On décrit un générateur (10) de rayons X portatif et tenu à la main de préférence, destiné à une utilisation intra-buccale ou à d'autres types de radiographies, un nouveau procédé d'acquisition d'images dentaires faisant appel à un nouveau porte-récepteur (24) relié physiquement à ce générateur portable léger (10), ainsi qu'un bras articulé (104) et un support (108) permettant d'utiliser un générateur (10) pour différents postes de soins dentaires. Le générateur propre à ce système délivre moins de rayons X sur une surface focale bien plus réduite que dans le cas des générateurs de rayons X dentaires classiques, ce qui limite la dose de rayons X produite et l'exposition globale du patient à ces rayons. La surface focale réduite permet aussi d'améliorer la résolution de l'image finale.
