ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In accordance with an aspect of this invention, a position detecting signal generator includes a first position or speed signal generating medium mounted on a rotating or moving body; a second position or speed signal generating medium mounted on the rotating or moving body, the first position or speed signal being different from the second position or speed signal in period; first and second signal detecting members arranged in correspondence with the first and second position or speed signal generating medium, respectively; an edge detecting circuit for differentiating the one of outputs of the first and second signal detecting members having longer period than the other, and detecting a leading or trailing edge of the one of the outputs of the first and second signal detecting members; and circuits for obtaining the logical product of the other of the outputs of the first and second signal detecting members by the output of the edge detecting circuit, whereby a signal representative of a rotational phase of the rotating body or of a fixed position on the moving body is generated from the output of the circuit means for obtaining the logical product.
