A position sensor encodes absolute position via n consecutive members of a pseudorandom sequence of bits, where each bit (30a-30k) comprises a region of high transmission or reflectivity adjacent to a region of low transmission or reflectivity. The pseudorandom sequence is chosen such that every series of n consecutive bits (30a-30k) in the sequence is predominantly formed from a predetermined bit value (1 or 0). The light transmitted or reflected from the series is therefore detected as a substantially periodic intensity pattern (42), which can be processed via Fourier analysis to yield an accurate interpolation of relative position. An example is given of a pseudorandom sequence, which can be represented as a cyclic Manchester code, in which at least 8 members of every series of 11 consecutive bits has a bit value of 1.

Cette invention concerne un détecteur de position codant une position absolue via n éléments consécutifs d'une séquence pseudo-aléatoire de bits, dans laquelle chaque bit (30a-30k) comprend une région de haute transmission ou réflexivité adjacente à une région de basse transmission ou réflectivité. La séquence pseudo-aléatoire est choisie de telle sorte que chaque série de bits consécutifs (30a-30k) de la dite séquence soit formée essentiellement à partir d'une valeur binaire déterminée (1 ou 0). La lumière transmise ou réfléchie par la série est donc détectée sous forme d'un schéma d'intensité sensiblement périodique (42), que l'on peut traiter au moyen d'une analyse de Fourier et qui donne une interpolation précise de position relative. Est fourni un exemple de séquence pseudo-aléatoire, qui peut être représentée sous la forme d'un code de Manchester cyclique dans lequel au moins 8 éléments de chaque série e 11 bits consécutifs a une valeur binaire de 1.
