A metal detector has three magnet/coil units positioned end-to-end. Each magnet/coil unit has a generally rectangular bobbin supporting a coil and a pair of bar magnets at opposite ends thereof. The three coils are connected electrically in a three-phase "Y" configuration. The voltages generated by all three coils are received by a microprocessor-based signal processing unit (SPU). The SPU generates a three difference signals V(x-y), V(y-z) and V(z-x) which represent the differences between the individual coil voltages. The SPU generates a sum signal representing a sum of the absolute values of all the difference signals and generates a trip signal if the sum signal is greater than a threshold. The SPU determines over which side of the coil assembly the piece of metal passes by comparing to a threshold the difference signal corresponding to a difference between the voltages from the coils at opposite ends of the coil assembly. The SPU more precisely determines the position of the piece of metal by comparing the difference signals to each other.
L'invention est un détecteur de métaux comportant trois unités aimant-bobine montées bout à bout. Chaque unité aimant-bobine comprend un logement généralement rectangulaire contenant une bobine et une paire de barreaux aimantés montés aux extrémités opposées de cette bobine. Les trois bobines sont connectées dans une configuration en Y triphasée. Les tensions produites par les trois bobines sont transmises à une unité de traitement de signaux à microprocesseur. Celle-ci produit trois signaux de différence V(x - y), V(y - z) et V(z - x) qui représentent les différences entre les tensions des bobines individuelles. Elle produit un signal somme qui représente la somme des valeurs absolues des signaux de différence, ainsi qu'un signal de déclenchement si ce signal somme dépasse un seuil donné. Elle détermine de quel côté du groupe de bobines se trouve la pièce de métal en comparant à un seuil donné le signal de différence correspondant à une différence entre les tensions des bobines qui se trouvent aux extrémités opposées du groupe de bobines. Elle détermine la position de la pièce de métal avec précision en comparant les signaux de différence les uns aux autres.
