A positioning device intended for filling in forms with the aid of a computer program and comprising a base plate on which a sample of a form or the like can be separably affixed, and an X-Y coordinate carriage assembly including two coordinate members. The first member is a ruler parallel to the X-coordinate, and manually movable over the sample in the Y-coordinate direction along the second member, which represents a static guide element secured to the base plate. The ruler is provided with a slide manually moveable therealong, so as to be capable of coinciding with any point of the sample. The ruler and the slide are provided, respectively, with a first and a second coordinate optical units, which are adapted to register, and transmit to a computer interface, signals corresponding to the position of the slider with respect to its initial reference position at a corner of the sample. Both these coordinate optical units are linked to the computer interface via an electronic unit and a manually controlled switch intended to be activated by the user when the location of said slide is manually brought into coincidence with the desired position on the sample. The signals transmitted by the two coordinate optical units are then processed by the computer program for controlling a printer during filling in a form (a drawing, or the like) which is identical to the sample affixed on the base plate.
