Abstract A positive displacement pump comprises a variable volume pump chamber and a drive mechanism having a displacement member for reducing the volume of the pump chamber. Fluid enters the pump chamber from a supply chamber located adjacent to and surrounding the lateral outer boundary of the pump chamber through a valve-controlled inlet passage that opens to the pump chamber at an elongated gap-like inlet opening. The inlet passage permits fluid to flow from the supply chamber into the pump chamber with substantially no pressure drop.
