A B S T R A C T A positive traction cross country ski provided with a retractable traction plate at the rear end thereof. In a preferred embodiment a hydraulic cylinder operated by hydraulic bellows means located under the ball of the skier's foot is employed to lower the plate into ground engagement. As pressure is released from the ball of the foot, return springs associated with the hydraulic cylinder retract the plate out of contact with the ground.
