A method of reducing the emission of formaldehyde from fibrous insulation having thereon a formaldehyde-based binder is provided. In particular, an amine-based compound is added after the formaldehyde-based has been cured and prior to the insulation being processed for storage or shipment to customers. The amine-based compound may be added after binder cure and either prior to the insulation product being cut into nodules or after the insulation product has been cut into nodules. Non-limiting examples of amine-based compounds include urea, melamine and/or dicyandiamide. Once applied to the insulation product, the amine-based compound acts as a formaldehyde scavenger to reduce the emission of formaldehyde into the air. In preferred embodiments, the amine-based compound is added with an antistatic agent. The post-cure addition of urea to fibrous insulation reduces the emission of formaldehyde into the atmosphere to meet stringent GREENGUARD standards and achieve GREENGUARD certification for formaldehyde emission.

La présente invention concerne un procédé de réduction de l'émission de formaldéhyde d'une isolation fibreuse ayant sur celle-ci un liant à base de formaldéhyde. En particulier, un composé à base d'amine est ajouté après le durcissement du liant à base de formaldéhyde et avant le traitement de l'isolation pour le stockage ou l'expédition aux clients. Le composé à base d'amine peut être ajouté après le durcissement du liant et soit avant le découpage du produit d'isolation en nodules soit après le découpage du produit d'isolation en nodules. Des exemples non restrictifs de composés à base d'amine comprennent l'urée, la mélamine et/ou le dicyandiamide. Une fois appliqué sur le produit d'isolation, le composé à base d'amine agit comme un piégeur de formaldéhyde pour réduire l'émission de formaldéhyde dans l'air. Dans les modes de réalisation préférés, le composé à base d'amine est ajouté à un agent antistatique. L'addition post-durcissement d'urée à l'isolation fibreuse réduit l'émission de formaldéhyde dans l'atmosphère pour répondre aux normes strictes GREENGUARD et obtenir la certification GREENGUARD relative à l'émission de formaldéhydes.
