Abstract of the Disclosure A post-primary oil recovery process wherein subterranean oil bearing formation is treated by the sequential steps of injecting an optional fresh water preflush through an injection well into the formation to adjust connate water salinity, followed by injection of an aqueous alkaline slug, such as agueous sodium carbonate thickened with a water dispersible or water soluble polymeric viscosifier, followed by injection of n thickened aqueous mobility buffer, and finally followed by the injection of an aqueous drive liquid with subsequent recovery of oil driven from the formation thereby. The thickened aqueous alkaline slug contains sufficient alkaline compound to satisfy 100 percent of the adsorption sites in the formation and all other consumption factors and to maintain interfacial tension between oil and water at a predetermined low level in the formation.
