ABSTRACT The postage meter includes a gear in driving communication with a print drum and a shutter bar receivable in an aperture of the gear. The shutter bar has a release position enabling the gear to cause driving of the print drum. The gear aperture is sized to permit a predetermined amount of gear rotation prior to encountering the then resident shutter bar. A control means is included for simultaneously actuating the gear drive means and the shutter from the aperture resident position upon initiation of a postage meter print cycle. Should the shutter bar be unable to be fully withdrawn from the gear aperture within the predetermined amount, means are provided for causing reverse rotation of the gear back to its initial or home position.
