A pellet of an oxygen-releasing material for use in breathing apparatuses is described. The pellet contains potassium superoxide as an oxygen-liberating chemical and a catalyst stimulating the release of oxygen when the apparatus is in use. The pellet consists of a compressed core of potassium superoxide containing 0 to 0.05% of the catalyst, which core is enclosed in a compressed coating of potassium superoxide containing 0.15 to 2% of the catalyst. A concentrated accumulation of the catalyst at the surface of the pellet results in an even release of oxygen throughout the whole time during which the apparatus is in operation. It means in particular that the oxygen supply is adequate immediately after the apparatus comes into the operation and no more oxygen than required is being released subsequently.
