A potato seed planter (10) includes one or more planting units (40) with an endless conveyor. A plurality of cups (58) are attached to the conveyor and each cup (58) receives a potato seed as the conveyor travels upwardly between upper (52) and lower (50) sprockets. As the cups (58) pass around the upper sprocket (52), any extra seeds in cups (58) are removed by centrifugal force, differential velocity and/or a vibration unit (98). These extra potato seeds (8) are recycled and returned to the seed bowl (45). The cups (58) then travel through a generally horizontal singulation section (100) and around a third sprocket (54). The cups (58) are inverted as they pass around the third sprocket (54) and the seeds (8) fall onto the back surface of the next forwardly adjacent cup (58). A guide structure (110) holds the seeds (8) in the desired position until they reach a discharge area (112) where the individual seeds (8) are discharged into the furrow.
