A tool (10) made of powdered metal, such as a modified T15 HSS in powdered form, and having a multi-lobular end profile (12) for punching multi-lobular recesses into workpieces, such as into the heads of fasteners. The tool (10) is homogenous and contains only carbides which are relatively small, such as in the 1-4 micron range. Also provided is a method of fabricating such a tool. The method requires that a powdered metal bar is cut and then the cut piece is worked to provide the multi-lobular tool. The final part is theoretically 100% dense, as opposed to being only 95-98% dense as in metal injection molded parts. In use, the final part, due to how it is fabricated, has increased column strength and increased impact resistance.

La présente invention a trait à un outil (10) réalisé en métal fritté, tel qu'un acier rapide T15 modifié sous forme de poudre, et présentant un profil d'extrémité à lobes multiples (12) pour le poinçonnage d'évidements à lobes multiples dans des pièces, tels que dans les têtes d'éléments de fixation. L'outil (10) est homogène et contient uniquement des carbures qui sont de taille relativement petite, comprise entre 1 et 4 microns. L'invention a également trait à un procédé pour la fabrication d'un tel outil. Le procédé comprend la coupe d'une barre de métal fritté et le façonnage de la pièce coupée pour fournir un outil à lobes multiples. La pièce finale présente une densité théorique de 100 %, par opposition à la densité des pièces métalliques moulées par injection de 95 à 98 % de densité.
