Power balancing techniques for a synchronous power generation system (10) are provided. One exemplary method for balancing power in a synchronous generator system (10) includes determining an output power characteristic of a synchronous generator (14) driven by a prime mover (12) and comparing the characteristic to a value derived from the output power of a plurality of synchronous generators (14). The method also includes providing a correction signal (72) to the synchronous generator (14) to modify the output power produced by that generator (14). A synchronous power generation system (10) having a plurality of synchronous generators (14) driven by a common prime mover (12) is also provided.
