A power control system for a laser which may be used in an optical time domain reflectometer. The system monitors the output light of the laser to control the bias current and pulse current to the laser. The system also responds to the backscattered light to control the pulse current so that the amplitude of the electrical signal representative of that light is kept within the operating range of the electronics associated with the backscattered light detector.
