ABSTRACT A radio frequency power amplifier which includes a sample- and-hold circuit connected to the output of a power level detector. A difference amplifier compares the output of the sample-and-hold circuit to a desired power level signal to develop an error signal which indicates a desired adjustment in the gain of the power amplifier. The sample-and-hold circuit is selectively switched from a sample mode to a hold mode in synchronism with a modulation state signal, so that when it is known that the power amplifier is to be turned off, such as during idle times in a time division multiple access system, the sample-and-hold circuit samples any DC offset presented by the detector. During other periods, such as when the power amplifier is operating, the sample-and-hold circuit is switched to a hold mode and the stored DC offset is used to correct a feedback signal that adjusts the gain of the power amplifier.
