Case 2660 POWER CONTROL OF A DIESEL ELECTRIC DRIVE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A control system for a diesel electric locomotive has a reference ramp circuit which receives an input representing desired power and provides a rate reference signal representing an acceleration limit with reference to said desired power. A power limit control receives the rate reference signal and a signal representing actual power and it provides a difference signal only when the actual power is above the acceleration limit for power. This difference signal is used to modify the normal control to the generator exciter and thus to modify the electrical load on the diesel engine. The circuit controls the application of electrical load, i.e. power, to load the diesel engine during a tractive effort in a manner which reduces incomplete combustion. The system also includes a reset control which resets the ramp reference signal in accordance with actual power so that it cannot climb far above when the locomotive is ascending a grade and result in excessive acceleration to catch up when the grade changes.
