ABSTRACT POWER CROSS PROTECTION OF THE TIP/RING INTERFACE TO CUSTOMER PREMISE EQUIPMENT This circuit provides power cross protection of the Tip/Ring interface with a resistor that fuses when subjected to a power cross condition. The Tip/Ring protection circuit consists of a resistor, capacitor, and transformer. The capacitor insures that DC current does not flow through transformer thereby reducing the transformer's physical size. Because the reactance of the transformer and the capacitor in the frequency range from 16 to 68 Hz are small compared to the resistance, the AC REN is essentially determined by the resistance. When power cross hazardous voltages are present, the power dissipated in the resistor would be at least 10 times the rated power. Under these conditions, the resistor will gracefully open circuit.
