ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An optical communication system has a plurality of channels each provided with a serial data flow and an initial timing signal in response to parallel data and an E/A signal. An optical transmitter provides an optical out- put in response to the serial data flow and initial timing signals and an optical receiver receiving the optical out- put through an optical data path and provides a serial data flow therefrom. A parallel data flow is provided in response to the serial data flow from the optical receiver, and an on signal is generated upon receipt of timing signals. An E/A circuit receives the timing signals for selectively energizing an additional channel by generating a correspond- ing E/A signal for return communication upon receipt of the timing signals.
