A power management method and system is used with mobile terminals and base stations of a wireless communications system. A conventional random access channel downlink that provides information on whether the channel is available for use by a new mobile terminal is enhanced. While a first mobile terminal is establishing a connection with and transmitting a message to a base station, the base station repeatedly transmits a random access channel downlink that includes the number of units of time remaining in the current message transmission. A second mobile terminal wishing to establish communication with the base station receives and processes this information. Normally, the second mobile terminal would continuously monitor the channel until an idle indication is detected. However, by knowing the number of units of time remaining for the current message transmission, the second mobile terminal can conserve battery power by ceasing reception and processing of the downlinked slots until the specified time has expired.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un système de gestion d'énergie qui sont utilisés par des terminaux mobiles et des stations de base d'un système de radiocommunication. Une liaison descendante à accès sélectif classique, fournissant des informations permettant de savoir si un nouveau terminal mobile peut utiliser le canal, est améliorée. Pendant qu'un premier terminal mobile établit une connexion avec une station de base et lui transmet un message, la station de base transmet de façon répétée une liaison descendante à accès sélectif qui comprend le nombre d'unités de temps restant dans la transmission du message. Un second terminal mobile souhaitant établir une communication avec la station de base reçoit et traite cette information. Normalement, le second terminal mobile surveille continuellement le canal jusqu'à ce qu'une indication au repos soit détectée. Toutefois, en connaissant le nombre d'unités de temps restant pour la transmission du message, le second terminal mobile peut conserver son énergie en interrompant la réception et en traitant les tranches de temps avec liaison descendante jusqu'à expiration du temps spécifié.
