ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A power saw having a power housing, a cutter bar, a saw chain mounted to travel around said cutter bar and a safety brake for stopping the saw chain. The saw has an improved device to provide for automatic release of said safety brake. That device comprises a blocking mechanism for holding the safety brake in a non-braking position. The cutter bar is mounted in the saw in a manner to permit short pivotal movements upwards from its normal position relative to the body of the saw. There is a mechanical release mounted in the saw and coupled to the cutter bar to receive a force transmission from an upward movement of the cutter bar. The release is associated with a spring loaded trigger action mechanism for triggering the release in response to the pivotal movements of the cutter bar. The effect is to release the blocking mechanism and cause the brake to be applied. The brake is applied immediately following a jerky movement of the cutter bar.
