Abstract of the Disclosure A power saw breaking device in which a very short release distance is taught. The breaking device includes a protection lever which is adapted to be pivoted by the operator and is connected to an actuating cam by which a pivot lever which engages a break band may be tensioned and locked by pivoting in the opposite direction the pivot lever may be unlocked thus bringing the breaking device into action. A tongue which serves to tension and lock and which is mounted to rotate about the same axis an an actuating cam and lies in the same plane as the cam acts as a pressure element towards one edge of the pivot lever and moves positively by the actuating cam in a locking direction. As a result the breaking mechanism is less complex and more compact than those known in the art.
