ABSTRACT On-line locomotives of a consist are determined by a control system that conserves fuel by throttling back trailing locomotives and operating the remainder at the most efficient throttle position. The engineer operates a control unit in the lead locomotive to command control units in trailing locomotives, depressing a "subtract power" button, to throttle back one trailing locomotive and "add power" button to return a trailing locomotive on line by advancing its throttle to the most efficient position. A cutout control signal from the lead locomotive, transmitted to trailing units in order (front to rear) by one spare trainline wire, has voltage levels that progressively decrease or increase in response to the commands. These levels are decoded by trailing units and throttles are set accordingly. The trailing units lower these levels by a fixed amount as the control signal is conducted by the trainline wire rearwardly from each trailing unit to the next. Accordingly locomotives are throttled back from the rear and returned on line from the front. An interrogation signal is periodically transmitted, and the trailing units respond sequentially, reporting the status of the locomotives. Once a report indicates that a trailing locomotive has been cut out or put on line, the lead unit ceases the progressive change in the control signal voltage levels. The lead unit also has a display to indicate the number of units on line. The control signal also has an identifier pulse portion detectable by the trailing units to effect cutout of a locomotive.
