ABSTRACT The device consists of a blocking transducer which chops the current provided by a rectifier at a relatively high frequency so that the current obtained from the mains is approximately sinusoidal after the higher frequency compo- nents have been filtered out. The blocking transducer includes a transistor which is controlled by pulses of approximately constant duration and repetition frequency and thus transmits a series of linearly increasing current pulses to a storage choke which is connected in series with a saturation choke, the current therefrom charging a first capacitor through a diode. A second capacitor in parallel with the series connection of the storage choke and the saturation choke forms an oscillating circuit which enables the transistor to switch on when the current in the oscillating circuit passes through zero, the voltage on the first capacitor being maintained at the value of the voltage provided by the rectifier by means of a diode. Auxiliary circuits controlling the chopping of the current for the load are powered by a secondary winding on the storage choke. In addition of maintaining sinusoidal the current drawn from the mains, the device provides a high level of efficiency so enabling its construction to be compact.
