The saw (10) includes a frame (12) having an opening (14) with a pair of proximate and distal blade retaining chucks (58, 60) located on respective sides of the opening (14). A saw blade (16) is retained between the pair of chucks (58, 60). A plurality of pulleys (32, 34, 36, 38) are attached in spaced relation to the frame (12) including pulleys (32, 34) on opposed sides of the opening (14). A flexible band (52) is entrained about each of the plurality of pulleys (32, 34, 36, 38), with the band (52) having a first end (54) operatively connected to the proximate blade retaining chuck (58) and a second end (56) attached to the distal blade retaining chuck (60). A reciprocating drive (72) is attached to the proximate blade retaining chuck (58). The reciprocating drive (72) and the flexible band (52) work in conjunction to pull the blade (16) in opposite directions during each cycle of the drive (72). An alternative embodiment of the present invention may take the form of a stationary table saw (fig. 7).
