ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Gluing operations using cross-linkable vinyl acetate polymer emulsions have previously required the mixing of the emulsion with a catalyst. The mix gels over a short period and cannot be used as a workable adhesive. The foregoing difficulties are overcome by the present invention which provides a pre-mixed catalyzed adhesive composition comprised of an aqueous cross- linkable resin emulsion including a vinyl acetate terpolymer a hydrocolloid, an acidic metal salt cross-linking catalyst and an amine cross-linking inhibitor, the mole ratio of the inhibitor to catalyst being sufficient to at least increase the shelf life of the resin emulsion plus catalyst alone and to provide a cured water resistant bond.
