This invention concerns the application of the trans-somatic technique to the testing of DNA constructs developed for use in the production of transgenic animals. The trans-somatic technique is defined here as a process by which some part(s) of an animal, specifically but not limited to the cells of the ruminant mammary gland, are modified to incorporate a foreign gene into the genome. This is in contrast to conventional germ line transgenesis, where the sperm or egg of the transgenic animal incorporates the foreign gene. According to the present invention, the trans-somatic technique is employed as a rapid, inexpensive pretesting procedure to optimize the performance of components of the DNA constructs used in germ line transgenesis. The trans-somatic technique in use here refers in particular, but is not limited to, the processes described in the patents: "Production of Value Added Milk by Incorporation of Specific DNA Sequences into Mammary Epithelial Cells" (Canadian Patent Application No. 2,199,212; filed March 5, 1997), and "Method for Producing a Recombinant Mammal in Vivo" (US Patent #5215904, issued June 1, 1993).
