There is provided a process for reversibly solidifying hydrocarbons for transportation or storage to prevent spillage of the hydrocarbon. The process involves mixing the hydrocarbons with a sufficient quantity of a hydrocarbon wax, such as paraffin, whereupon cooling the resulting mixture leads to solidification into a buoyant, united mass. The minimum amount of hydrocarbon wax required to solidify the oil will depend on the type of crude oil, the type of wax being used and the temperature that the solidified mass is being maintained at during shipping. In the case of crude oil shipment by ocean tanker the crude may be pre-treated with the hydrocarbon wax in the storage compartments and the mixture transported in solid form. The solidified, united mixture effectively prevents spillage of the crude in the event of the hull being ruptured and is not displaced by sea water. The buoyant solidified mixture prevents the ship from sinking in the event of a hole being formed in the hull of the ship. Waste hydrocarbons such as contaminated PCBs are solidified using the hydrocarbon wax at much higher levels of the wax to ensure complete encapsulation of the oil. In the case of transportation of crude oil, the wax may be recovered from the crude oil by heating the mixture to liquefy it and the components separated by fractional distillation.
L'invention porte sur un procédé permettant de solidifier de manière réversible des hydrocarbures destinés à être transportés ou stockés pour empêcher leur déversement accidentel. Le procédé consiste à mélanger les hydrocarbures à une cire de pétrole, telle que de la paraffine, à la suite de quoi le refroidissement du mélange provoque sa solidification en une masse flottante homogène. La quantité minimale de cire de pétrole requise pour la solidification des hydrocarbures va dépendre du type de pétrole brut, du type de cire utilisée et de la température à laquelle la masse solidifiée va être maintenue pendant son transport en mer. Lorsque le transport du brut se fait par pétrolier, on peut effectuer le traitement préalable du brut à la cire dans les compartiments de stockage puis transporter le mélange sous sa forme solide. Le mélange solidifié en une masse homogène empêche efficacement le déversement accidentel du brut en cas de rupture de la coque et ne peut être déplacé par les courants marins. Le mélange solidifié flottant empêche le bateau de couler lorsqu'une brèche s'est ouverte dans la coque du bateau. Les résidus de raffinage, tels que les polychlorobiphényles contaminés, peuvent être solidifiés avec des quantités beaucoup plus importantes de cire pour assurer l'encapsulation complète du brut. Dans le cas du transport du pétrole brut, on peut extraire la cire à partir du brut en chauffant le mélange pour le liquéfier, les constituants étant ensuite séparés par distillation fractionnée.
