PREALLOYED IRON POWDER ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A prealloyed powder is described which is useful for promoting optimum hardenability when exposed to copper and graphite during sintering. A powder metal preform including such prealloyed powder, copper powder and graphite. The prealloyed powder has a mesh size of -80 mesh, an oxygen content no greater than 0.25% and a carbon content less than 0.04%. Each particle of the powder has an irregular spherical configuration and consists of a steel alloy having 0.4 to 0.65% by weight of molybdenum, optionally along with 0.4 to 0.65% by weight of nickel, with the remainder being substantially iron.
