ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Dispersible colloidal particles of .alpha. -alumina mono- hydrate are prepared by conditioning aqueous solutions of an aluminum salt with a water miscible organic solvent and then precipitating alumina with an aqueous solution of base. The reaction mixture is agitated and heated, filtered, washed and dried to obtain the product. Dispersions of the product can be used for ?ooking paper to provide antiskid properties, while the solid product can be used as a catalyst.
