A mechanical lock having a lock housing with a rod axially movable through the housing. The rod is normally locked against movement through the housing by a coil spring tightly wound about the rod. The spring is axially captive between end bearings in the housing. The spring can be partially unwound to release the rod for movement through the housing. The end bearings are adjustable in an initial condition of the lock for removing free play of the spring between the end bearing. The lock avoids the necessity to weld bushings to a lock housing as in the prior art. The lock avoids the necessity for the bushings, which add significantly to the cost of prior art locks.
