The invention relates to an alkaline-earth-aluminate-type compound which is at least partially crystallised such as in the form of a beta- or tridymite-type alumina and which comprises a composition having formula a(M1O).b(MgO).c(Al2O3), in which M1 denotes at least one alkaline-earth and a, b and c are integer or non-integer numbers whereby 0.25 = a = 4, O = b = 2 and 0.5 = c = 9, M1 being partially substituted by europium and at least one other element belonging to the group of rare earths having an ionic radius of less than that of Eu3+. In addition, the compound takes the form of substantially-whole particles with a maximum average size of 6 ?m. Said compound can be used as phosphor in plasma-type screens or in trichromatic lamps, backlights for liquid crystal displays or plasma excitation lighting or in light-emitting diodes. The invention also relates to a precursor compound of the aforementioned compound.

Le composé de l'invention est du type aluminate d'alcalino-terreux, cristallisé au moins en partie sous forme d'une alumine de type bêta ou tridimite notamment et il présente une composition de formule a(M1O).b(MgO). C(Al2O3) dans laquelle M1 désigne au moins un alcalino-terreux et a, b et c sont des nombres entiers ou non vérifiant les relations 0,25 <= a <= 4; O <= b <= 2 et 0,5 <= c <= 9; M1 étant partiellement substitué par de l'europium et au moins un autre élément appartenant au groupe des terres rares dont le rayon ionique est inférieure à celui de Eu3+. Il se présente en outre sous forme de particules substantiellement entières et de taille moyenne d'au plus 6 µm. Il peut être utilisé comme luminophore dans les écrans de type plasma ou dans les lampes trichromatiques, de rétro éclairage des écrans à cristaux liquides ou d'éclairage à excitation plasma ou encore dans les diodes électroluminescentes. L'invention concerne aussi un composé précurseur du composé ci-dessus.
