"PREFILTERS" Abstract of the Disclosure The invention provides a pretreatment structure having a predetermined thickness and suitable for use in an oil-from-water coalescing filter and made from a fibrous material upon which oils exhibit energies of adhesion of from 2 to 50 ergs/cm2 said material comprising fibres having dimensions and a packing density such that with said pre- determined pretreatment structure thickness upon passage of an oil/water emulsion through said pretreatment structure oil droplets of diameter at least 10 um are captured, coalesced and larger oil droplets released. Such a structure s particularly suitable, in combination with a filter tube, for use in fabricating a filter cartridge of the oil-from- water type. The invention includes such a filter cartridge, optionally in combination with a housing, and a method of separating oil from an oil/aqueous liquid using the cartridge (or any filter unit incorporated the pretreatment structure of the invention). - 1 -
