A B S T R A C T A process for preparing 1,1,1-trichloroethane by reacting chlorine monoxide with chloroethane, 1,1-di- chloroethane, or a mixture. The process is conducted at a temperature of -20° to 80°C., preferably from 0° to 40°, in the liquid phase and in the absence of actinic light. When employing the above conditions, 1,1,1-trichloro- ethane is prepared in high yields, and only minimal amounts of other polychlorinated ethanes are produced.
