A B S T R A C T 2,3-Dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-hydroxybenzofuran, a compound useful inter alia for the preparation of the known insecticide Carbofuran (i.e. 2,3-dihydro-2,2- dimethylbenzofuranyl methylcarbamate), is prepared by heating 3-isobutenyl-1,2-dihydroxybenzene, optionally in conjunction with 3-methallyl-1,2-dihydroxybenzene, in the presence of a sulphonic acid catalyst.
